About Us

Formely Leeds Indexers

Leeds Indexers Logo Originally formed in August 2000 as the “Leeds Indexers”, we were a group of family historians actively researching in the Leeds area. Living locally, we were well aware of its vast size and the challenges of locating burial and memorial records. Some of our members were already working on individual transcription projects, and it made sense to share this valuable information with others.

We were never a formal society or family history group—just a collective of like-minded individuals aiming to make genealogical data freely accessible. This initiative led to the creation of the Leeds & District Records, Inscriptions, and Plans project.

Yorkshire Indexers

As time went on, our work expanded beyond Leeds into other parts of Yorkshire. Creating and distributing CDs of PDF records soon became cumbersome and hard to maintain. In response, we rebranded as the “Yorkshire Indexers” and developed an online searchable database. With the rise of digital photography, we introduced an image gallery linked directly to the records.

The image above is a nod to our original PhotoPost gallery, which served us well but eventually became obsolete as the software was no longer supported. This made it impossible to update the site securely or efficiently.

So, we took the bull by the horns and built this new website from the ground up. We've listened to our members and made several key improvements:

This website is and always will be a free resource. We sincerely thank all of our previous subscribers—your support made this possible.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to the many individuals and organisations who have helped us along the way. You know who you are, and we are truly grateful for your past, present, and future support.
