About Yorkshire Burials

Formerly Leeds Indexers

Leeds Indexers logo Originally formed in August 2000 as the Leeds Indexers, we were a group of family historians actively researching in the Leeds area. Living locally, we were well aware of its vast size and the challenges of locating burial and memorial records.

Some of our members were already working on individual transcription projects, and it made sense to bring this work together and share the information with other family historians.

We were never a formal society or family history group, simply a collective of like-minded people with a shared aim of making genealogical information freely accessible. This led to the creation of the Leeds & District Records, Inscriptions and Plans project.

Yorkshire Indexers

As time went on, our work expanded beyond Leeds into other parts of Yorkshire. Creating and distributing CDs of records became increasingly cumbersome and difficult to maintain, so we became Yorkshire Indexers and developed an online searchable database.

With the growth of digital photography, we were also able to build an extensive image gallery and link photographs directly to transcribed records. Researchers could not only find an entry in an index, but in many cases see the memorial or the original source.

The Yorkshire Indexers website
Our original photo gallery served us well for many years, until its software was no longer supported and the site could no longer be kept up to date and secure.

Yorkshire Burials

Rather than lose the work built up over many years, we built a completely new website and database from the ground up. Yorkshire Burials is the latest chapter in that story.

Our aim remains much the same as it was in 2000: to transcribe, preserve and make available burial and memorial records that help people discover more about their Yorkshire ancestors. The site brings together records, inscriptions, photographs and information about each burial place, in a way that is easier to search and to keep up to date.

Free for everyone

Yorkshire Burials is, and will remain, a free resource. The records we transcribe should be available to everyone, whether they are researching a single ancestor or a much larger family history. We sincerely thank our past subscribers and everyone who has supported the project over the years: your generosity made what you see today possible.

Supporting Yorkshire Burials

Yorkshire Burials is run by volunteers. Access to the records is free, but running the website is not: there are ongoing costs for hosting, storage and keeping the site secure.

If Yorkshire Burials has helped your research, please consider a small contribution towards these costs. Every donation, however small, helps keep the site free and lets us keep adding records.
