Help
New to burial records? Records explained answers the common questions: parish and burial registers, grave books, memorial inscriptions, finding a grave in Yorkshire and where the records are kept.
Searching
Searching the burial records is free for registered members: register or log in. Fill in as much or as little of the search form as you like.
- Not sure of the spelling? Choose "Sounds like" next to the surname, or search for part of it.
- Year not certain? Choose a range such as "± 2 years" next to the year.
- Know the cemetery? Choose it: you can then search by register, entry number, grave type, section and grave number too.
- Lots of results? Type in the boxes under the column headings to narrow them, and use the buttons above the table to sort them.
Records and extracts
Each record shows the entry as it appears in the register, the grave and anyone else recorded in it, photographs of the grave, and a citation you can copy for your notes. Record extract gives you a page to print or save as a PDF for your family history files.
Grave numbers starting YB-
Many graves, especially in old churchyards, have no official number. So that we can link a grave's photographs to the people buried in it, we give it a reference of our own, starting YB- (for example YB-012). Wherever one appears, the site says it is a Yorkshire Burials reference.
A YB- reference is ours alone: it is not on the stone, the cemetery's plan or the original register, so the cemetery's office or the record office will not know it. When you cite a grave, give it as a Yorkshire Burials reference, as the citation on each record does.
Your account
- Staying logged in. You stay logged in until you close your browser, or after 8 hours without doing anything. Tick Keep me logged in on this device for 30 days when you log in, on your own computer, tablet or phone, to stay logged in there. Logging out, or changing your password, ends it.
- Forgotten your password? Use Forgotten your password on the login page, and we will email you a link to set a new one.
- Limits. To protect the records from being copied wholesale, each account can view up to 150 records and make up to 100 searches an hour. Ordinary research rarely comes near this. If you reach a limit, the page says when you can carry on; if you need more for a research project, contact us.
- Not logged in? Visitors can look at up to 60 cemetery pages an hour. Log in to carry on straight away.
Reporting an error
We work hard to keep the records accurate, but mistakes happen: in the original registers, in reading old handwriting, or in typing. If you spot one, or can add information, please tell us.
- About a particular record: open the record and choose Report an issue. It goes straight to the volunteers who look after the records.
- Anything else, such as a problem with the website or a cemetery's details: use the contact form.
If you can, tell us where your information comes from, so we can check it.
Using our content
You are welcome to use what you find here in your own family history research. Please read our reproduction policy before publishing or sharing it, and cite Yorkshire Burials as your source (each record gives you a citation to copy).
