Cemeteries, the map, and where records are held
For everyone
We list every burial place in Yorkshire we know of: municipal cemeteries, churchyards, chapel yards, Quaker and Jewish burial grounds, and lost ones, with what we hold for each and where the original records are kept. Anyone can look at these pages.
The list of cemeteries
Choose Cemeteries in the menu at the top.
- Name or place: part of a name is enough, for example "St Mary" or "Otley". The search also looks at other names, the location, the area and the old district.
- Area: one district, such as Leeds or Ryedale.
- What we hold: Burial records, Photos and inscriptions, YAS, Grave plans, Nothing yet.
- Status: Open, Closed, Private, Abandoned, Cleared, Unknown.
Show on a map shows the same places on the map.
The map
Choose Map in the menu.
- Each pin is a burial place, coloured by area. Where pins crowd together a number shows how many there are: zoom in, or click it.
- Show: Everywhere, or only the places With burial records, With photos or With YAS memorials.
- Find a place: type part of a name and choose a result to zoom to it.
- Click a pin to see the place's name and what we hold, with a link to its page.
- Show as a list goes back to the list.

A cemetery's page

- Grave plan and Timeline, where the cemetery has a plan (see Using a grave plan).
- Directions opens your maps app at the cemetery.
- Photographs of the cemetery itself, and About the project: notes on the place and on our work there.
- Photographing progress: how many of its sections our volunteers have finished.
- Registers transcribed: each register on the site, with its years and number of entries.
- Details: other names, address, area, historic district, county and riding, denomination, status, when it opened, the first and last burials, its size, and who to contact.
- Nearby: a small map and the other burial places within 5 miles.
Other sources and where they are held
This part lists what else exists for the cemetery: original registers, grave books, plans, transcripts, indexes, microfilm and scans. Each says what it is, its years and any reference, and Held by names the archive, library or society that has it, linked to their page. View online opens it where it is online, and some have a file (a plan or a PDF) to open.

This is the place to look when you need to see an original: the registers we have transcribed are copies, and the original may hold more, such as the grave owner or a note in the margin.
Archives and record offices
A repository's page (open it from Held by) gives its address, contact details and website, and What they hold for the burial places on our site. Please check with them before visiting: opening hours and access rules change, and some records need booking in advance.
Visitors who are not logged in can open up to 60 cemetery and archive pages an hour. Log in to carry on straight away.
