Reproduction policy

Our transcriptions, photographs and indexes are the work of volunteers over more than twenty-five years. We share them freely for family history research, and ask you to respect that work when you use them.

You are welcome to

  • use records and photographs in your own family history research;
  • keep copies of individual records, extracts and photographs in your personal files and family history software;
  • share an individual record or photograph with relatives or fellow researchers, or on a family tree, with a credit to Yorkshire Burials;
  • quote individual records in family history articles, talks and society journals, with a credit.

Please ask us first before you

  • publish our photographs or transcriptions in a book, magazine or other publication;
  • use them for any commercial purpose.

Please do not

  • copy records or photographs in bulk, or use software to do so;
  • upload our records or photographs to other websites or databases (for example grave-listing or genealogy sites) other than as individual items on your own family tree;
  • remove credits or watermarks, or present our work as your own.

Copying of this kind has already put inaccurate versions of our records on other websites, which does researchers no favours. Our records are checked and corrected here, so a link to the record on Yorkshire Burials is always better than a copy.

How to credit us

Each record gives you a citation to copy. For a photograph or a short mention, "Yorkshire Burials, yorkshireburials.uk" is enough.

The original records

Our transcriptions are not official certificates. Copyright in the original registers belongs to the churches, councils and archives that hold them; for an official copy, apply to them. Where we know who holds a register, the cemetery's page and each record extract say so.

Asking permission

Please contact us, saying what you would like to use and how. We are usually happy to help.
