About the project
The burial registers
The burial registers for the churchyard, 1830 to 1954, have been transcribed in full by Stephen Miller (2026). The originals are at the West Yorkshire Archive Service (reference P84); the later register is kept by the church.
- Vol 1 (P84-14): 1830 to 1857, entries 1 to 553.
- Vol 2 (P84-15): 1857 to 1903, entries 1 to 1613. The page and entry numbering in this volume is not always consistent.
- Vol 3 (P84-16): 1903 to 1919, entries 1 to 800.
- Vol 4 (P84-17): 1919 to 1935, entries 1 to 802.
- Vol 5 (P84-18): 1935 to 1954, entries 1 to 806.
- Burials 1990 to 2005: only the burials in the old churchyard are included so far (52 entries). Those in the newer part of the cemetery (the Garden of Rest and the sections marked SF and NC) are not.
Missing register: the register for burials from 1954 to 1990 has not been transcribed. The church's List of Graves Book names about 840 people buried in these years, with their graves, and they may be added from it later.
Missing pages: two volumes have pages missing from the copies we worked from.
- Vol 1, pages 26 and 27 (entries 201 to 216, 1841). Ten of the sixteen burials have been found in the List of Graves Book and entered from it, with the month and year of burial only. The other six entries are still unknown and show as Missing Page.
- Vol 4, pages 96 to 99 (entries 761 to 792, 1935). All 32 burials have been found in the List of Graves Book and entered from it, with the month and year of burial only. Their order within the missing pages is not known, so their entry numbers are approximate.
Grave numbers and the List of Graves Book
The church's List of Graves Book, an index of burials by surname giving each grave, has been transcribed and checked against the registers. Most burials now carry their grave number, written as section, row and grave: for example 2.14.7 is Section II, row 14, grave 7. The newer part of the churchyard is written N (the book and later register call it 4 or IV). The old red plan numbers written in the book have been turned into section, row and grave numbers where the book gives both.
About 850 burials still have no grave number, mostly where the book does not give one or the entry could not be matched with confidence. A few grave numbers are still to be checked on site.
The grave plan
In progress: a grave plan of the churchyard is being built and is not yet published. It covers Sections I to VI and the New Part, about 2,400 graves so far, placed from the church's section maps and the red minute book, photographs of the headstones taken with GPS readings, and the grave numbers in the List of Graves Book.
- Sections I, II, III and VI and the New Part follow the church's maps and are checked against headstone readings.
- Sections IV and V, between the main pathway and the main north path, are harder: much of this area is overgrown, with brambles and trees, and the map is not to scale. Their layout is based on the red minute book's map and a few accurate readings, and will be refined as more readings are taken.
Can you help?
Photographs of headstones in Oulton churchyard, especially in Sections IV and V, a copy of the 1954 to 1990 burial register, or the missing pages of Vol 1 (pages 26 and 27, 1841) would all help. Please get in touch through the contact page.
