About the project
The burial registers
The four burial registers held by Leeds City Council have been transcribed in full. The work was started by Keith Whitaker and completed by Frank Fortescue and Christine Leach in December 2015.
- Consecrated Register 1: entries 1 to 19000, 1857 to 1921. Transcribed by Keith Whitaker and Christine Leach.
- Consecrated Register 2: entries 19001 to 29858, 1921 to 1991. Transcribed by Christine Leach.
- General (Unconsecrated) Register 1: entries 1 to 19880, 1857 to 1921. Transcribed by Frank Fortescue.
- General (Unconsecrated) Register 2: entries 19881 to 27709, 1921 to 1990. Transcribed by Frank Fortescue.
Burials after these registers end are kept on computer by the council and were not part of this project.
The grave plan
The plan follows the council's original grave plan. The graves are numbered in columns, up one column and down the next, with a few extra graves fitted in where there was space.
- Unconsecrated (General): graves 1 to 6925. Every number is on the plan.
- Consecrated: graves 7086 to 15422. 7,131 of these are on the plan. Most of the rest, about 1,200 graves numbered from 14193 to 15421, are in a part not yet mapped: for now only one grave in each of those rows is shown.
Why there are no graves 6926 to 7085. The council's plan repeats numbers in two places on the unconsecrated side (below), 160 numbers in all. Its unconsecrated numbering therefore ended at 6925 instead of 7085, while the consecrated graves were numbered from 7086. Numbers 6926 to 7085 were never used.
Work still to do: where the council's plan repeats a number, the grave shows in two places on our plan. The positions are right; it is the numbers that clash. Until each one is sorted out, a grave you look up may show in two places. Each link opens the plan at that grave. (Checked October 2026.)
Unconsecrated side: two columns numbered twice on the council's plan
- 2835 to 2894. At the top of one column (61 graves, near the No. 4 path) the council's plan has 2835 where 2895 should be, and carries on from there, repeating the numbers of the column beside it. The burial dates suggest the older family graves (mostly 1860s to 1900s) are in the first column and the graves first used in 1929 to 1938 are in the second. Grave 2835: first column · second column
- 4262 to 4317. One column (55 graves) is numbered 4262 to 4317 on the council's plan, repeating numbers already used in the columns beside it. On our plan it carries the numbers 4363 to 4415, 4316 and 4317 for now, which clash with the next columns instead. The repeated column · the column next to it
Consecrated side: four single graves numbered twice, probably typing slips when the plan was drawn. The likely right numbers are graves not yet on the plan, all with burials in the registers.
- 10032: copy 1 between 10031 and 14182 is right; copy 2, beside 10033 and 14184, is probably 14187 (Throp family).
- 14091: copy 2 between 14090 and 14092 is right; copy 1 is one of the single graves standing for an unmapped row.
- 14175: copy 1 beside 10656 and 10657 is probably right (Crowther family); copy 2, beside 14177 and 13123, is probably 14176 (Strickland family).
- 14182: copy 2 between 14181 and 14183 is right; copy 1, at the end of the 10028 to 10032 row, is probably 14186 (George William Throp).
Can you help?
Photographs of the headstones in these places, showing the names, would settle which numbers are right. The burial registers or receipt books may also show how the council told the repeated graves apart. Please get in touch through the contact page.
